Genius Time

Team 15 have been working super hard on their passion projects this term. The process can get VERY messy and chaotic as each of us takes our learning in a different direction.
Mrs Turner is super-proud of how mature everyone is. She is also very thankful the wonderful parent help she gets on a Thursday afternoon.
Watch this space for our finished creations, but for now, enjoy this short picture video of what we've been up to....

Reading Skills

All year we work on different skills for Reading. The last few weeks in Team 15 have been focused around using the punctuation to help us read with expression and flow. (We have been using punctuation in our Writing too so that it makes sense when other people read it!)

Here is a video of Zach and Simeng learning to use punctuation when reading aloud.

Zach was brave and went first. When he read the first time, he forgot to use the punctuation so we gave him some feedback - did you hear the difference when he tried it the second time? He was AMAZING!

Simeng is second in the video. This was her second attempt too. The rest of the kids are giving her feedback on how she used the punctuation. Great Team-work Team 15!

How do YOU think they went?

Leave us some constructive feedback in the comments.

Swimming

Here are some pics from Swimming today.
Mrs Turner is very proud of the way Team 15 shined with their manners and their self belief. We have some very good swimmers in our class, and EVERYONE tried their best!
Swimming is funded by the John Walker Foundation, Field of Dreams foundation.

Maths Talk

Today, the Squares Group were working on sharing their Maths strategies.

They started by trying to work out the multiplication or division problem given to them with a buddy. Some of them used materials (fingers and beans) and some tried to do it in their mind (jedi powers).

After that, they had to write down their strategy (the way they worked it out). The hardest part about the whole thing was using their words to describe in detail HOW they had come to that conclusion. The actual answer's were 'easy' (according to them).

Here are two videos of them sharing their strategy.

Mrs Turner thinks they did pretty well considering this video app was new and it was strange sharing to a screen.

Do you have any tips for us to improve? If you do please leave them in the comments below. (Remember to be nice - we are still learning!)

Wheel-a-thon

Today Team 15 participated in the Sunnyhills PTA Wheel-a-thon.
Some of us brought our bikes and some of us brought our scooters. Here are two pictures of us getting ready to go:

At morning tea we had a special visit from Simon and the Skate School. We were "WOWED" with the cool tricks! Check out the video!

Finally it was our turn to do our 'laps'. Mrs Turner tried really hard to get a picture of everyone! Some of us were just too fast for the camera!

Jessie must have been going REALLY fast as the wheel fell off! Don't worry though, Mrs Turner and Mr Leslie managed to fix it!

Here us a video if us riding our scooters:

How many laps could you do?

WALT - Use speech marks

Last week we had some special guests come into Team 15.
Gnomeo and Doug.

Gnomeo and Doug are two gnomes that the Sunnyhills teachers have been taking on adventures.
When they came to Team 15, the children used them to help us write some conversations between 2 or more people using correct punctuation.

We were super successful in creating conversations. It was a little tricky to put the punctuation in the correct places. We are learning fast though!

See Chloe's writing below.

Gnomeo & Doug
By Chloe

It all began on a sunny Sunday morning when a delivery truck rumbled down past my house, when suddenly…The doorbell rang and it was ear-splitting, it never stopped! I finally was able to dash to the door and outside stood Doug and Gnomeo!
Hey there Chloe! cried Doug.
Um hi I replied confused. After a while I suddenly realised! Now, I  know what you want to do, you want to play at the park!I exclaimed.
Let’s go!cried Gnomeo. When we got there we had a picnic and played until we were exhausted.

Sunnyhills GEMS

Sunnyhills GEMS Learning Power - Self Belief

Last week we started to look at and discuss the Term 2 GEMS learning power of Self Belief.
Mrs Grant told us this was the learning power for this term. We worked in groups to brainstorm what we thought this learning power might look like, feel like and sound like. If we saw or heard someone using this learning power what might they look like or sound like.

Here a a few pictures sharing us collaborating and brainstorming these ideas.

Make sure you check our blog again soon to see more about this wonderful Sunnyhills GEM learning power!

Let's Play Rippa Rugby

On Tuesday afternoon all the Year 3 and 4 children participate in sport.
This week Team 15 were learning the skills of and playing Rippa Rugby.
We learnt that we must pass the rugby ball backwards and we all have to work as a team to get the ball up the field to score a try.
The Rippa Rugby rips are pretty hard to rip off.
We all had a load of fun in the sunshine playing Rippa Rugby with Mrs Grant
Here we are practising our passing.

Ask us to show you how to play and how to pass a rugby ball. We are all experts now!

Parts of Speech - Could You Sort Them?

Hey there parents and other adults,
Team 15 have been working hard on learning the difference between Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives. We are pretty sure we can explain it to you at home. Go on... test us!

Check out this vid to see the work we have put into learning about these parts of speech.

We are pretty proud.

Get N.Z. Writing

Get New Zealand Writing.

Team 15 are part of the Get N.Z writing project.
We got a special delivery with lots of goodies that are going to help us write an amazing poem
One of the special goodies was a little tin fill with some exciting treasures that are going to inspire our poem writing.

At this stage we don't know what is in there.
We shook it and made a list in our writing books on what we think might be in there.
Some of the suggestions were;
money
mini statues
mini instructions
hamburgers
paper clips
nails
gems

Keep looking at our blog to see how we are going with our poem.. and to see what is in the box.

Splish and Splash at Sunnyhills

The Year 3 Team (Rooms 14, 15 and 16)had the best day at Splish and Splash.
There were three great activities for us to participate in on a hot summery day.
1. Stuck in the mud under the sprinkler
2. Water challenge against another team to see who could fill the water trough the fastest
3. Being blasted with the hose, and practising our Pause, Breathe and Smile while being sprinkled with rain.

It was such a great afternoon to cool down and have some fun.
We were so lucky that Mrs Trembath organised this for us to do.
Thank you to Mrs Trembath, great idea!

Let's Talk Math Strategy

In Team 15 we are learning about the importance of explaining our mathematical thinking. Yesterday we were given a word problem to solve. Mrs Turner didn't even care if we got the answer wrong as long as we could explain how we worked it out.
First we learned how to breakdown a question (Look for the key words and numbers and figure out what it is asking us to do).  We identified that the key word was 'ate'. This meant it was a Subtraction problem.

Did you know LOT'S of other words mean the same as subtract? - takeaway, minus, loose, lost, ate, gave away! (if you can think of more, post one in the comments section)

For some of us, the problem was REALLY easy. For some of us, it was REALLY hard. Even our best mathematicians though, were in the learning pit for a while trying to think of the best way to explain their thinking.

To solve the problem, some of us drew pictures of cupcakes and crossed them out as we counted. A couple of us spotted a 'magic 10', but most of us just counted backwards from the biggest number. All of these are perfect strategies to use. We are very proud!

These 3 brave, amazing people volunteered to share their strategy on camera. Can you give us some feedback in the comments? We think Chloe did particularly well with her explaining how/why she used the numbers. What do you think?

Lion Dancing

Today we were VERY lucky to have a presentation by "Uncle Peter" and the  E-PACS Lion & Dragon Dance Group  Unfortunately the children (who are the other end of the big lion) were at school so we couldn't see the 'full' display, but we did learn heaps!

Peter told us all about the Lion Dance and why it is an important part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. This group is very famous in the Chinese community. They often get asked to big important events and offered their time to us today.
We learned some of the 'poses' we need to practice. CAN YOU BALANCE ON ONE LEG LIKE THIS FOR THE WHOLE TIME YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

Theo from our class even got to have a go with the symbols (Peter said it was okay to practice at home with the pots and pans - has anyone tried yet?)

It was such a cool display. Please check out  the E-PACS Lion & Dragon Dance Group
facebook page if you would like to see more.

Here is a mashed video that Mrs Turner took of the event

Please leave us your comments.

Ice Breaking

Happy first week Team 15!
Mrs Grant and Mrs Turner are so excited to have you all in our class. We are super proud of your good manners and the way you have showed a growth mindset this week.

Here are some pictures of us getting to know each other. This occasion called for us to step out of our comfort zone and 'interview' other people in the class. We had to find out things that we didn't know about each other. Did you know that no-one in Team 15 likes the colour pink, lots of people have pets, and quite a few of us have travelled on an aeroplane?

We are looking forward to lots more collaborative activities like this one.

Musiqhub

Today we had a special visit from the Musiqhub people. Here they are playing the saxophone to a song you might know!

If you would like to learn an instrument, please meet them at 8am in the Music Room or Library tomorrow with your parents.
