Welcome to Room 15's blog for 2019. We are an awesome Year 3 class with two amazing teachers Mrs Adelle Grant and Mrs Sarah Turner. We are looking forward to all the exciting learning and new things this year! Check our blog regularly and please leave your comments.
In Team 15 we are learning about the importance of explaining our mathematical thinking. Yesterday we were given a word problem to solve. Mrs Turner didn't even care if we got the answer wrong as long as we could explain how we worked it out.
First we learned how to breakdown a question (Look for the key words and numbers and figure out what it is asking us to do). We identified that the key word was 'ate'. This meant it was a Subtraction problem.
Did you know LOT'S of other words mean the same as subtract? - takeaway, minus, loose, lost, ate, gave away! (if you can think of more, post one in the comments section)
For some of us, the problem was REALLY easy. For some of us, it was REALLY hard. Even our best mathematicians though, were in the learning pit for a while trying to think of the best way to explain their thinking.
To solve the problem, some of us drew pictures of cupcakes and crossed them out as we counted. A couple of us spotted a 'magic 10', but most of us just counted backwards from the biggest number. All of these are perfect strategies to use. We are very proud!
These 3 brave, amazing people volunteered to share their strategy on camera. Can you give us some feedback in the comments? We think Chloe did particularly well with her explaining how/why she used the numbers. What do you think?
Today we were VERY lucky to have a presentation by "Uncle Peter" and the E-PACS Lion & Dragon Dance Group Unfortunately the children (who are the other end of the big lion) were at school so we couldn't see the 'full' display, but we did learn heaps!
Peter told us all about the Lion Dance and why it is an important part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. This group is very famous in the Chinese community. They often get asked to big important events and offered their time to us today.
We learned some of the 'poses' we need to practice. CAN YOU BALANCE ON ONE LEG LIKE THIS FOR THE WHOLE TIME YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH?
Theo from our class even got to have a go with the symbols (Peter said it was okay to practice at home with the pots and pans - has anyone tried yet?)
Mrs Grant and Mrs Turner are so excited to have you all in our class. We are super proud of your good manners and the way you have showed a growth mindset this week.
Here are some pictures of us getting to know each other. This occasion called for us to step out of our comfort zone and 'interview' other people in the class. We had to find out things that we didn't know about each other. Did you know that no-one in Team 15 likes the colour pink, lots of people have pets, and quite a few of us have travelled on an aeroplane?
We are looking forward to lots more collaborative activities like this one.
